Some railings are a code requirement you want handled quietly. Others are the first thing a guest touches at the front steps, or the line that frames a view of the Bay. This page is about the second kind. We build one-of-a-kind railings for high-end homes in Piedmont, the Berkeley Hills, Montclair, and the Alameda Gold Coast, for the owner, architect, or designer who cares about how the work is detailed and how long it lasts, not about who submitted the lowest bid.

For more than 20 years we have fabricated custom metalwork in our own shop under a C-23 ornamental metal classification. We are licensed, insured, locally owned, and small enough that the person who welds your railing is the person who measured it. To design a railing worthy of the house, call (510) 390-9618 and we will start with a conversation about the design.

Bespoke architectural railings, made to a vision

Bespoke here means exactly that. We do not pull a railing from a catalog and change the color. We design and fabricate a railing to your vision or your architect's drawings, as a single considered object that belongs to the house. The range of what we make is wide on purpose.

Hand-forged ornamental iron

Traditional and contemporary ironwork drawn, forged, and welded by hand, with brass or bronze accents where the design calls for warmth.

Frameless structural glass

Minimalist tempered and laminated glass set in a concealed base shoe or on discreet standoffs, so the guard reads as a clean plane and the view stays open.

Sculptural stainless cable

Tensioned 316 stainless aircraft cable on crisp posts for a near-invisible horizontal line, engineered so the runs stay taut and compliant.

Matching gates, fences, and sets

Entry gates and garden fences built to match the railing so the whole property speaks one visual language.

Explore the individual disciplines on our glass railings, wrought iron railings, cable railings, custom gates, and custom fences pages. On an estate project these rarely stand alone. A single home might combine a forged iron stair inside, frameless glass on a view deck, and a matching iron fence along the street, all detailed to agree with one another.

Materials and finishes chosen for the property

On a hillside or waterfront property, the material decision is the longevity decision. Salt air off the Bay, fog that sits in the hills, and decades of sun all work on metal and hardware, so we specify for the exposure of your specific site rather than for a generic spec sheet. For anything facing marine air we build in 316 marine-grade stainless, the alloy that holds up to salt where cheaper stainless eventually weeps rust at the welds. On ferrous ironwork we powder coat over hot-dip galvanizing, an oven-cured finish over a zinc coating that far outlasts paint alone.

ElementWhat we typically specifyWhy it lasts here
Cable and exposed fittings316 marine-grade stainless, 1x19 aircraft cableResists salt-air pitting near the Bay and in the fog belt
Glass guardsTempered or laminated glass, concealed hardwareFewer exposed fasteners to corrode; clean sightlines
Ornamental ironPowder coat over hot-dip galvanizingZinc barrier under a cured finish outlasts paint on steel

For historic estates we also do period-appropriate restoration. On a genuine landmark we can work within the California Historical Building Code, which at Section 8-504 gives qualified latitude to preserve original character, so an original forged guard can often be repaired or matched rather than torn out.

Design collaboration and shop drawings

The best estate railings come out of a real back-and-forth, so we are comfortable in whatever seat the project needs. If your architect or interior designer already has a detail, we build to it and flag anything we would refine for strength, safety, or finish before a single piece is cut. If you have an idea and a reference image but no drawing, we develop the detail with you until it is right.

Either way the process is deliberate. We produce CAD and shop drawings so you can see proportions, post spacing, profiles, and connections before fabrication, and we review the design against the California Building Code. Guards are required where a walking surface sits more than 30 inches above grade, East Bay departments enforce a 42-inch guard height, and openings must reject a 4-inch sphere. Those numbers shape a design more than people expect, especially on cable and glass, and resolving them on paper is how an elegant railing also passes inspection. Where a joint or forged element really matters, we prototype it so you approve a physical sample rather than guess from a line drawing.

Matching railings and fences

On a larger property the railing is one movement in a longer piece. The street fence, the entry rail, and the deck guard all read together or they read as mismatched. We fabricate matching sets so a forged motif at the front steps carries through to the fence line, or a clean stainless-and-glass vocabulary on a view terrace repeats along the garden fence.

Because everything is made in one shop to one set of drawings, the profiles, finishes, and proportions actually match rather than roughly resembling one another. See our custom gates and custom fences pages for that side of the work, and plan these together with the railings from the start so the whole property arrives as one design.

Built for hillside and coastal estates

Estate work in this region lives on difficult ground, and that is where fabrication quality shows. In the Berkeley Hills and Montclair, railings run along elevated decks and long exterior stairs on steep lots, where anchoring into the structure correctly matters as much as the look. The ground here is seismically active, with the Hayward Fault running directly through Oakland and Berkeley, so connections and posts must be detailed to hold, not just to sit pretty.

Closer to the water, in the Alameda Gold Coast and other near-sea-level neighborhoods, salt-air corrosion is the governing problem and it is relentless. That is why marine-grade stainless, galvanizing, and cured finishes are the baseline on these jobs, not upsells. Guards carry real loads too, a top rail engineered to resist a 200-pound concentrated load, which is one more reason the welding and anchoring under a handsome finish have to be right. We work often in Alameda and Berkeley, so the corrosion and seismic realities of these homes are familiar ground. Questions about your lot are worth a quick call at (510) 390-9618.

How a project starts

Bespoke work is priced after we understand the project, not before, so we do not publish figures for this tier. Estate railings vary enormously with the design, material, metalwork, length of run, and difficulty of the site, and a hand-forged iron stair is a different animal from a frameless glass terrace. An honest number comes from a design consultation and an on-site measure, and that is where we begin.

Design consultation

We talk through the vision, the architecture, the materials, and how the pieces relate across the property.

On-site measure

We measure actual conditions and assess exposure, structure, and access so the design and quote fit reality.

Drawings and quote

You receive shop drawings and a scoped proposal, with prototypes where a detail warrants one.

Fabrication and install

We fabricate in our shop, finish, then install and anchor, and see the work through final inspection.

Questions, Answered

Do you work with architects and interior designers?

Yes, and often. We build to an architect's or designer's details when they exist, produce shop drawings for coordination and approval, and flag anything we would refine for strength, safety, or finish before fabrication. When there is only a concept, we develop the detail collaboratively. Either way the goal is a railing that realizes the design intent and passes inspection.

Can you match an existing railing or restore a historic one?

We do both. We can match an existing profile so an addition or repair reads as original, and we restore period ironwork on historic estates. On genuine landmark homes we can work within the California Historical Building Code, which at Section 8-504 allows qualified latitude to preserve original character, so an original forged guard can often be repaired or faithfully matched rather than replaced.

What does a luxury custom railing cost?

We do not publish figures for bespoke estate work because the honest answer depends on the design, materials, metalwork, length of run, and site. A hand-forged iron stair and a frameless glass terrace are very different projects. We provide a real number after a design consultation and an on-site measure, which is where accurate pricing comes from. Call (510) 390-9618 to set that up.

Which materials hold up best on a coastal or hillside property?

Near the Bay, 316 marine-grade stainless for cable and fittings, architectural glass with concealed hardware, and powder coat over hot-dip galvanizing on ironwork all resist salt-air corrosion far better than cheaper alternatives. On hillside lots the same finishes apply, and the anchoring and connection detailing become critical given the seismic ground. We specify for your exact exposure during the consultation.

Can you build a fence that matches the railings?

Yes. We regularly build matching sets so a street fence, a garden fence, and the railings share one motif, finish, and set of proportions. Because everything is made in our own shop to one set of drawings, the pieces genuinely match rather than roughly resembling each other. A matching entry or driveway gate can be drawn into the same set. See our custom gates and custom fences pages.
