Metal Fences From a Railing Shop

Most of what comes out of our shop is railing, but plenty of homeowners want the yard to look as finished as the porch. So we build custom metal fences too: powder-coated aluminum picket, steel picket, and ornamental iron, fabricated in our own shop and installed by the same crew that builds our railings.

If you're in Alameda or anywhere in the East Bay and want a fence that belongs with your house, call us at (510) 390-9618 for a free on-site estimate.

We're licensed and insured, with more than 20 years in the trade, and we do the fabrication ourselves. The details that make a fence look custom, like picket spacing, post caps, and how the top rail meets a post, get decided at the welding table, not pulled off a pallet.

Fences That Match Your Railings

This is what a general fence contractor usually can't do. We can match your fence to the railings already on your home, or to new railings we're building at the same time. Same picket spacing, same top-rail profile, same post size, same powder coat color.

Got powder-coated aluminum railings on your front steps? We can carry that look out to the sidewalk so the porch and fence read as one design. If your Victorian has wrought iron railings with a particular finial or scroll, we can echo those details along the property line without overdoing it.

It works out back too. If we're replacing your deck railings, a matching fence around the patio below makes the whole space feel planned instead of pieced together.

Materials and Finishes for the East Bay

Alameda is an island sitting just above sea level, and salt air is hard on metal. We build every fence with that in mind, whether it's going up in Alameda or a few miles inland.

Powder-coated aluminum is our go-to for most homes near the water. It doesn't rust the way steel does, it's light enough to install cleanly on long runs, and a good powder coat keeps the color even for years.

Steel picket is stiffer and heavier, which some folks want for a substantial feel or a taller run. We protect it with galvanizing or a zinc primer under the powder coat, so the coating isn't the only thing between the metal and the moisture.

Ornamental iron suits scrollwork, finials, and older homes, and it gets the same zinc-rich protection under the finish.

For hardware we use 316 marine-grade stainless. Cheap fasteners are usually where rust shows up first on a coastal fence, streaking down a post long before the fence itself has a problem.

Styles We Build

Front-yard ornamental fences are the most common request: lower, open picket designs that define the yard and frame the house without hiding it. On older Alameda homes we keep the lines period-friendly, and on newer homes a clean flat-top aluminum picket often looks best.

Side and property-line fences run longer and a bit taller. The priorities here are straight lines, solid post footings, and handling grade changes cleanly, either stepping the panels or raking them to follow the slope.

Fences around decks and patios are where matching your railings really pays off, tying the enclosure below straight into the railings above.

We work across the East Bay, from Oakland Craftsman bungalows to mid-century homes farther south, and we'll help you pick a style that suits the house.

Fence Height and Permit Basics

Under the California Building Code, fences up to 7 feet tall are generally exempt from a building permit. That's the short version, not the whole story.

Cities set their own zoning height limits. Front-yard fences are commonly limited to roughly 3 to 4 feet, with taller fences allowed along side and rear lines, and corner lots have visibility rules that can limit height near the intersection.

Alameda has its own Permit Center, and other East Bay cities have their own departments, so confirm with yours before you settle on a height. We'll flag anything we notice during the site visit, but your city has the final word.

Our Fence Process

Free On-Site Measure

We walk the fence line with you, measure, and note grade, soil, trees, and utilities.

Layout and Style

We set post locations and choose style, height, material, and color. Matching your railings? This is where we lock in spacing, profile, and finish.

Shop Fabrication

Panels and posts are cut, welded, primed or galvanized, and powder coated in our shop.

Installation

We set posts on proper footings, hang the panels, and check that the lines run straight and true.

Cleanup

We haul off our debris, including the old fence if we took one down.

Scheduling is quick, and we'll give you a realistic timeline once we've seen the site.

How to Get a Free Estimate

We don't publish fence prices because there's no honest single number. Cost depends on the length, height, material, terrain, and what it takes to set post footings in your soil. A short aluminum front-yard fence on flat ground is a very different job from a long steel run climbing a slope.

The fastest way to a real number is a free on-site estimate. Call (510) 390-9618 or book your free on-site estimate online, and if you have railings you'd like the fence to match, mention it so we can look while we're there.

Questions, Answered

Do you install gates?

Yes. Gates are handled through our custom gates service, and we lay out the fence with the opening, post sizing, and hinge side planned for the gate from the start, so the fence and gate share one picket profile and finish.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Alameda?

Under the California Building Code, fences up to 7 feet tall are generally exempt from a building permit. But cities set their own zoning height limits, front-yard fences are commonly capped at roughly 3 to 4 feet, and corner-lot visibility rules apply. Alameda has its own Permit Center, so confirm the rules for your property before you finalize a design.

Can you match my fence to my railings?

Yes, and it's one of the main reasons people call us for a fence. We can match picket spacing, top-rail profile, post size, and powder coat color to your existing railings, or build the fence and new railings together so they match from the start.

How much does a custom metal fence cost?

It depends on the length, height, material, terrain, and the post footings your site needs, so we don't publish a price. We'll come out for a free on-site estimate and give you a real number for your fence. Call (510) 390-9618 to set it up.

Do aluminum fences rust near the bay?

Aluminum doesn't rust the way steel does, which is why it's a great fit near the water. What usually fails first on a coastal fence is cheap hardware, so we use 316 marine-grade stainless fasteners and a quality powder coat.
